Cannabidiol or CBD is one of over 100 compounds found in hemp plants. It is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid that has the ability to act on cannabinoid receptors that are part of the Endocannabinoid System. Plant cannabinoids bind with this system which can help regulate certain vital functions of the body, including:
- Pain
- Inflammation
- Sleep
- Emotional response
- Pleasure
- Immune system
When the Endocannabinoid system is in sync, the human body is able to achieve what is called homeostasis. Homeostasis refers to stability, balance, or equilibrium within a cell or the body.
CBD is a compound that is found in both marijuana and hemp. Marijuana and hemp are two different varieties of cannabis that come from the same species of plant (Cannabis sativa L). In general, CBD is found in both. The hemp plant is an entirely different strain of cannabis that contains high quantities of CBD and minimal traces of THC.
No, CBD will not get you high. CBD is non-intoxicating.
CBD functions by binding to cannabinoid receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system. These receptors have been found in almost every cell and tissue type in the human body. CBD then can largely function to create homeostasis or balance in your body. This is why it has so many applications. For example:
- For Pain – CBD has been shown to help regulate the inflammatory response. Oftentimes, less inflammation means less pain.
- For anxiety – – CBD has been shown to make serotonin more bioavailable as well as help decrease the production of cortisol.
- For Sleep – CBD has been shown to help regulate your circadian rhythm or your sleep/wake cycle.
The 2018 Farm Bill removed restrictions on the sale, transportation, and possession of hemp-derived CBD products and allowed for the transportation of hemp-derived CBD products across state lines as long as the products follow regulations. While CBD is completely legal in most states, some states differ in regulations. This is because all states have their own Controlled Substances Acts (CSA) which generally mirror the federal CSA. Notable exceptions include Iowa and Idaho. As of this writing, Iowa has no current bill or statute that has been processed in 2021 to legalize CBD purchasing or selling. Idaho requires that all CBD products must contain 0% THC. Again, the vast majority of states treat CBD similar to other agricultural products. Check with your State to find regulations that apply to you.
CBD is widely considered safe with no known side effects, though some have reported drowsiness when they take CBD in large quantities.
That said, if you have or suspect a medical condition or are taking any medications, please consult your physician before use.
Drug tests look for THC. On a properly performed and legitimate drug test, products that do not contain THC (Meli Botanicals THC-Free products have 0% THC) should not test positive. CBD products with trace amounts of THC (Meli Botanicals’ Whole Plant products have less than 0.3%THC) are unlikely to show up on a drug test. However, as you use it over time, you do increase the risk of testing positive.
Start by taking 10mg (half dropper) of the inflammation formula and the anxiety formula twice per day. If you are using CBD for sleep, try 20mg (full dropper) before going to bed. Try this for 10- 14 days and journal your progress. Everyone is different. Everyone’s challenges range in severity as well. You may want to take more or less depending on your results. Continue to track your progress and adjust accordingly.

We recommend giving your pet 1mg of CBD per 10 lbs. of body weight. Two individual drops of Meli Botanicals Pet Formula equal 1mg of CBD. So, if your pet weighs 10 lbs., we recommend two drops per day; 20 lb. pets should receive 4 drops per day; 30 lb. pets should receive 6 drops per day, etc.
